About.

We care about our food system.  We think the best way to make it better is to enable innovators to innovate.  So we're building a network and community that together will create a food system that is a win for buyers, suppliers, the communities they serve, and the environment.

Our Motivation

We’re not just about reducing food waste.  But it is what motivates us.  Did you know that if food waste were its own country, it would the 3rd largest polluter in the world?  Food waste adds unnecessary costs for those that can least afford it and unnecessary damage to our environment.  By making data more readily available we will enable others to find innovative solutions, make the food system more efficient, and help our environment.

$74 Billion

That's how much food waste costs farmers, manufacturers and consumer facing businesses.

1 in 7

That's the number of Americans that are food insecure despite the excess availability of food.

21%

That's the percentage of fresh water food waste consumes.  Plus, there are significant environmental impacts from wasted fertilizer, energy and land.

Our Past

We started out buying and selling surplus and imperfect produce.  Almost immediately it became obvious that barriers to the free flow of data and eCommerce were going to limit our impact.  It simply took too much time to phone, fax, and email growers and then find buyers willing to take rescued produce.

While we we're focused on reducing farm level food waste, what we experienced is common throughout the entire food chain.  It takes too much manual effort for market participants to get product availability and pricing information.   This raises prices, leaves sellable product unsold, and increases the time it takes to manage a business.

Our Future

We’re launching the Open Food & Beverage Commerce Network through a technology partnership that gives us access to product, price, and availability data from over 300 suppliers.  And, the ability to directly send orders into their systems.  But we intend to do more.

We will work with innovators to make our food system more efficient.  Perhaps it’s a new market for distributor to distributor sales.  Or, a new app to rescue produce and feed the food challenged.  We know that by enabling the free flow of data we can be part of amazing innovations.  Together, we can make our food system better.
